As India commemorates the 75th anniversary of its Constitution, the Lok Sabha has commenced a two-day debate amidst an intense political confrontation between the government and the opposition.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, 52, the latest Member of Parliament from the Gandhi family, delivered her inaugural speech in the House.
Politics often emphasises the role of optics. During her address, the television broadcast featured two Members of Parliament seated behind her. One is notorious for his comments regarding the dismemberment of the Indian Prime Minister. At the same time, the other is recognised for his poetry and glorifying the infamous criminal from Prayagraj. Indeed, it is correct to note that both Members of Parliament are of the Muslim faith.
Her speech focused less on the Constitution itself and more on individuals such as Ateeq, Adnan, and Uzair. It struck me that maybe the Constitution was framed primarily to uphold the rights of minority groups only.
“Our Constitution serves as a shield for justice, unity, and freedom of expression; however, over the past decade, the ruling party has made efforts to undermine this shield,” she blabbered.
